Here's my ride -

Image

I'm 6'6'' so it's difficult to find larger frames, but luckily the guitar player in my band has a workshop and was able to get his hands on one large enough for me. I pieced the bike together for me and charged me 40 bucks. I'm fairly sure I could have done it myself, but it was nice to learn everything from someone who's been riding and building bikes forever.

If I could make a suggestion, I would just hit up garage sales, craiglist, and other local means. You can find quality bikes for cheap and then just make changes if you end up liking riding. No point in buying a Lambo if you just started driving...unless that's how your livin?

I found an early 80's Raleigh Record Ace at a garage sale early this summer for 15 bucks. It has a fairly rare plastic Brooks saddle, which is what caught my attention..and the frame is nice and large. Haven't done much with it yet, but some tear down and cleaning up. Don't have much use for multi speed bikes, so I'll probably strip it down and make it a little more simple.

Here's someone selling the same bike on ebay -

It could be a good starter bike, but it might break easily.
It's made of steel, so I doubt it'll break, but it's for sure heavier than the pricier aluminum professional track bikes, but yeah, you sometimes DO get what you pay for.
Stay away from Republic. Their frames are prone to rusting.
For starter bikes people love getting something from: www.bikesdirect.com the most popular being the Mercier Kilo TT and Windsor The Hour.

Did someone say bicycles....

I have been into vintage balloon tire bicycles for a few years.

I have seen all the fixed and a few BMX bikes so I figured it's time to get some vintage rides on the forum.

This is one of the dozen or so bicycles that I have in my collection.... they range from the 1920's -1970's.

That's cool. You watch American Pickers? Mike Wolf is a big bike collector, and he finds some pretty cool stuff on that show.

Guam... I probably gonna see Mike this weekend at a vintage swap my bicycle group is holding in Long Beach.

A few of the guys I ride with go around the country and do the picking deal too...

This bike was one I got when a friend did some picking in Florida.

Oh nice! Where in LBC is the vintage bike show at? Oh and if he's approachable, give him a heads up to look for vintage Vans sneakers! Hell, any sneakers! Give him your number, hehe.

The bicycle swap will be at the Pike restaurant and Bar on 4th st it is being held by a group called Cyclone Coasters.

It will have mainly parts that are pre (1941 and earlier), early post war (50's) and some stuff from the 60's and 70's.

There will be no fixie stuff!!! :D

I can see the look on Mikes face when I ask him to "keep his eye out for Deadstock Vans in a size 8.5 mens". :o

There is also a ride in L.A where they will be closing 7 miles of the streets downtown this Sunday (10-10-2010) from 10-4.
http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me ... 5831.story

And also on the 23rd of October is the Tour da Fat which basically is a 5 mile ride, party and concert the rest of the day...
