There is some new rules as far as online sales go, and technically VAULT and SYNDICATE were never supposed to be available/sold online, but now they are cracking down. Accounts that get caught selling them via an online store will have their account put on hold and reprimanded.

Their authorized account list is definitely not accurate right now (we've been an account since 003 releases and they still havent put us on) and I was told that the # of worldwide accounts is currently only about 40.

Wow, I didn't know that. I mean there is so much online stores that carry Vault and Syndicate.

As I understand it all-

It just went out in the last month. I cannot speak for VAULT since we arent a dealer, but the main reason was a lot of accounts in general just assumed because they were a vans dealer and had a website, that they could combine the two. The crackdown is just so that VANS is represented in the proper light and is only available on high quality sites. So a lot of shops will most likely be filling out Online dealer apps....

One of the things in the agreement though was the point that Vault and Syndicate were not to be sold online, period. They can be shown/announced as in stock but online sales, or literal "sales" as in discounts are not supposed to be listed on websites. These divisions are about a quality retail experience and are meant to be destination items. In the end it will definitely drive more buzz for releases.

That said, I don't think the idea is to discourage sales. I think they just want the customer to be educated about the shoes, a thing that most often cant be done through your stock online experience. I am still happy to help out a customer who can't find them at their local dealer, and other shops that have built relationships with their phone/out of state customers will certainly do the same.

I believe a couple overseas stores such as Caliroots will probably still have them up for sale as i dont know if the new rules are international, but online "spot"s etc that always sold syndicate online and for under retail should be dealt with accordingly, as it hurts the brand identity.

Ok, off my soapbox now...

Naw, it's cool, we like to hear it from the store's POV, so we understand what the hell happened? After Dressen halfcabs, pretty much, Syndicates weren't for sale online anymore. I remember most of us got our Max Schaaf packs online, and because they were online, everyone that was on the OTWS got their pairs, some for discount, because of traditional annual shop sales that were going on! Now days, I rely more on eBay, and HUF! Liberty Board Shop doesn't seem to get a lot of Syndicate inventory, and Active stopped selling them (lost account when restructured?), so the next physical store for me to rely on would be Supreme, or CalSurf. I don't mind the marketing tactics of the Syndicates and Vaults, otherwise the collecting wouldn't be as fun!

^ Couldn't agree more. I think the qty's they are releasing and the doors they are in are becoming more and more accurate. There are definitely still some shops that just throw them up on the same slatwalled shelf as 250+ other styles, and that kills it, in my opinion. I realize I am going a bit overboard, but I literally have 400+ sq ft. solely dedicated to the latest "S" release. I think it helps tell the story and lets the style stand on its own, allowing me to educate the customer properly and there is no confusion that these could just be another pair of random skate shoes on the shelf.

I totally overlooked that aspect, but it is so true. Vans is the best hands down, when it comes to telling a story with their product. They really know what collaborating is all about, and the focus being the artist, or brand chosen for the collabo. It's a very unique way of marketing, and to top it off, it seems like the Syndicate group (and sometimes Vault), have no budget constraints at all, because the material, craftsmanship, hell, even the box design blow everything else out of the water, hehe. Not to mention the marketing. Most Syndicate releases came with extra accessories as well. All this, while still staying under $100? It's a no brainer, that this is something special. Why don't more people collect Syndicate?!?
