Not hating or anything, but I still don't understand the hype around this collaboration. Is there something I'm missing?

Punk bands don't come much more Cali than the Descendents.
Shoes first came out at a time when collecting wasn't so big and the shoes were a real late bloomer. People got into them mainly when the stocks had run dry and the limited run for SXSW a year or two back did little but stoke the fires for fans.
Not the flashiest, but it's pretty great to see them back.
